By 1980, bassist Tina Weymouth and drummer Chris Frantz had found the wormhole connecting punk and funk. As the rhythm section for Talking Heads, the husband-wife team had just toured behind ‘Remain in Light,’ a landmark collection of anxious, innovative dance cuts. Capitalizing on a brief Heads hiatus, they formed a side project, Tom Tom Club, and set out in search of new grooves, not knowing what they’d find.
“We wanted to do something dance, and that was kind of the thing at the time,” Weymouth tells Spinner. “But we also loved rock ‘n’ roll. We loved disco. We loved all the stuff going on with [Italian disco producer] Giorgio Moroder, and all that stuff that was getting played at the Paradise Garage in New York City, but we also really liked rock ‘n’ roll.”
