Unsettling gothic gospel altercations spun and thickened with a dark angst and a rustic atmosphere. Coarse vocals are set amidst a haunting cacophony of vintage instruments and cantankerous rhythms. –Maximum Ink Magazine

Imagine Death himself plopping his ass down at your campfire with his pal and bandmate, Desperation, and they break out in song. What do you think that would sound like? I am gonna say Those Poor Bastards is pretty close. Turning down the coun [Read More...]

Laying off their country sound just a little, TPB (moon)shines in this instant gloom classic. This is easily best genre album of the year so far. Intentionally WAY more dark then their other recordings, this cd is full of haunting piano melodies and torturous screams.
The sound varies from song to song, sometimes sounding rough and barren, sometimes sounding like you’re in a cave near an evil carnival, and sometimes sounding like an eerie children’s lullaby… and despite the pure blackness this disc exudes, many of the songs still come out pretty, in a gothic sort of way.
This album could appeal to anyone from country-western to straight up doom metal.
With The Plague, Lonesome Wyatt and The Minister have really spread their wings, and cast a desparate shadow over the music industry.
I’m newish to the whole gothic country thing. Generally I hate country and all the sexy tractors that go with it. Then I discovered 16 Horsepower and Wovenhand and found this wonderfully dark southern gothic “country” sound. I got hooked and loved it. By the by the “you might like this” button suggested these boys. Reviewers stated it was their most experimental release which intrigued me so I picked it up. I must say Wyatt has one of the creepiest and well ranged voice I’ve heard in a while. The music is dark as are the lyrics in all their fire and damnation cry for redemption best. Anyone who can black metal scream on a country album deserves some serious kudos. I’ve since picked up “Hellfire Hymns” and “Satan is Watching,” my wife summed this band up perfectly: “it makes me feel I should be burying a body somewhere.” This is a great disk, buy it.
