The Bluegrass Tribute to Modest Mouse : Something You've Never Heard Before

About the Artist

Like so many indie bands who hit it big, Modest Mouse seemed to pop up overnight when they dropped their smash hit Good News for People Who Love Bad News. However, they had been winning over fans with their mix of clever wordplay and eclectic songwriting for well over a decade by the time “Float On” took over the airwaves. The foundation of the band–Isaac Brock, Eric Judy and Jeremiah Green–have made it their business to create some of the most disarming [Read More...]

I have been a Modest Mouse fan for a long time and friends of mine had raved about this album, so it took me awhile, but I finally took a peak at it.

I am so sorry that I did not listen to this before. It was done by the bluegrass band “Iron Horse” and they did such a wonderful job on the arrangements that I was rather blown away.

I love the originals, and on this cd they do a bunch of the best know tracks and you know, I actually like some of them better than the original. I think that “Gravity Rides Everything” just sounds better more upbeat than the way MM did it.

If you are a Modest Mouse fan, or even if you are not a MM fan or have never listened to them, but you are a bluegrass music fan, this is a must own.

SUMMARY: God I hate Modest Mouse. God I love this album.

I don’t fit the personality-type of the majority here. I like all kinds of music, but what I like does not include Modest Mouse. Sorry folks, I’m just not into it. Every time one of their songs starts to rock, then the guy has to start singing. I can’t stand the sound of his voice. That said, I am plenty familiar with their songs, having been subjected to their entire catalog throughout my years attending art school, plus years after I’ve unfortunately chosen friends who think they are a really great band.

A friend of mine turned me onto this and I was completely blown away. This is an incredible album. At first, hearing ‘Float On’ and ‘Trailer Trash’ I was laughing, but this is no joke. My favorite ones are ‘Interstate 8′ and ‘3rd Planet’. They and other songs have this wistful, sad effect, enough to literally make you cry, — so be assured the original “emo” tag is not lost here. I mean they don’t just make these songs sound like bluegrass, — they really tear them up and play hard. I’m really in love with this album and intend to check out others in the ‘Pickin” series. And for fans of Modest Mouse, let me say I have gained a new appreciation for their songwriting, if not their sound.
