Seven decades after he made his recording debut with Andy Kirk’s 12 Clouds of Joy, jazz violinist Claude “Fiddler” Williams is still swingin’ the blues. Williams, who was born in Oklahoma, played guitar with Count Basie in Kansas City in the 1930s. (His replacement was Freddie Green.) In the 1970s, he enjoyed a comeback working with Jay McShann. Williams is to the violin what Django Reinheart was to the guitar. His playing is easy-going but passionate, complex and interesting but still catchy enough to make the melody stick in your head. I only hope I get to see him live before he goes off to the great concert hall in the sky - the guy is in his 90’s and still amazing.
