Robyn Hitchcock has given fans a treat in the form of 12 previously unreleased cover songs. The English performer released the tunes just before Christmas via his website. While the songs are not yet available for download, visitors of the site can listen to the streaming tracks on a trolley-shaped audio player.
The cover songs include live performances from a benefit concert last Halloween for Doctors Without Borders as well as studio sessions from the album ‘Propellor Time,’ which Hitchcock released last year with the Venus 3. Nick Lowe sings lead vocals during Bill Monroe’s ‘Blue Moon Of Kentucky’ while Hitchcock covers David Bowie’s ‘Changes’ and ‘Life On Mars,’ two of four selections from Bowie’s 1971 ‘Hunky Dory’ album. Other numbers include Johnny Cash’s ‘I Still Miss Someone,’ Nick Drake’s ‘Pink Moon In C’ and Willie Dixon’s ‘Wang Dang Doodle.’
Hitchcock will play three solo shows during late March in Los Angeles but will precede those with a handful of U.S. dates in select cities with Joe Boyd.
