There are two ways to approach this album. If you take it at its most literal–a collection of beats–there’s a good chance that you’ll find it damn snoozy. You never quite realize how monotonous and downright boring hip-hop tracks can be until you remove the lyrics and are subjected to four minutes of the same bars looping over and over. Pete Rock is a great producer, no question, but he doesn’t do much to vary the pace, concocting an album’s worth of mid-tempo grooves th [Read More...]

This is probably one of the best Cd’s i’ve herd in a while. The Instrumentals are so nice i can’t decide if i’d rather have an MC rhyme on it or not, they just stand out so well on there own. Plus when they do step to the mic the lyrics aren’t just thrown down. Even the small interludes between tracks are superior beats. Well crafted piece of art by Pete Rock.
The Real reason i’m writing this review is to inform anyone who is interested in this CD. After checkin up on things there is a second version of this that was released. At this time it is not avalible on Amazon.com.
In my opion it is a better CD, it contains all the tracks listed above except Hip Hopcrisy, Give It to Y’all, and What You Waiting For. These tracks (excluding Hip Hopcrisy which is excellent) are the weakest ones on the original. These tracks are replaced with one new instrumental (Take The D Train) and three new tracks with MCs Nature, Freddie Foxxx, and a CL Smooth reunion. The Nature song is pretty good (i wish i coulda had Hip Hopcrisy back though) and Freddie Foxxx rips the mic to accompany some blaring horns and painos. The CL Smooth track (Back on The Block) more than worth getting the second version and drives me crazy that these guys don’t hook up for a full album again.
Regardless, either version of this album is worth getting. Hopefully Amazon.com will make the second version availible soon, but if not check out information about the label (given above) to see what you can do.
