Lauryn Hill’s touring bassist, Dewey Tucker, was shot and killed while driving on Interstate 80 just outside of Oakland, Calif. on his way to band practice Tuesday night. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Tucker was driving a white Nissan Sentra when someone with a semiautomatic pistol opened fired on him. The California Highway Patrol found him dead at the scene. Tucker was just 24 years old and recently engaged to be married.

In addition to touring with Hill, Tucker played bass with Bay Area political rappers the Coup featuring Boots Riley. He was scheduled to perform with that group this Friday at the Independent in San Francisco and was en route to their rehearsal in Oakland when the murder took place. His mother, Shirley Tucker, told the Chronicle that he lived and breathed music and always stayed out of trouble.
