Five years ago Fun Fun Fun Fest founder Graham Williams accidentally overbooked a night at Emo’s in Austin, Texas. “I called Stubb’s [barbecue restaurant, bar and concert venue]. They were closed for the holidays,” Williams tells Spinner about the origins of the F3F. “I was actually trying to give the shows away,” he says. Shows for artists including Peaches, Circle Jerks, Spoon and Dead Meadow were among those left stageless.
Having thrown events with other promoters in nearby Waterloo Park, Williams put together one giant concert bill for that December night in 2005. “It was just going to be a big show and it turned into a festival,” he recalls. Four years later the fifth annual Fun Fun Fun Festival has grown to four stages, three days and a 11,000 fans. Not bad since its humble, unplanned beginnings.
