Billy Corgan on John Mayer: “He’s Trying to Destroy His Career”

After reading John Mayer’s controversial recent interviews, Billy Corgan is convinced Mayer is trying to self-destruct. “He’s trying to destroy his career,” Corgan told Rolling Stone’s Brian Hiatt in an interview outtake from RS‘ revealing new Corgan feature in the new issue, on sale now. “Rather than take a year off or change his musical direction… some part of it is irritating his soul to the point where he’s trying to blow it up. Certainly a talented guy, but empathetically, standing on the sidelines, it’s hard to watch someone literally burn their career to the ground — speaking as somebody who’s done it.”

Corgan also responded to Mayer’s comments on their mutual friend Jessica Simpson (”sexual napalm,” Mayer called her). “As far as it pertains to her. I think for any person who has celebrity to sort of drop rocks at somebody else’s feet like that — there’s things you should really just keep your mouths shut on. There’s things that should just be left alone.”

Beck to Release Record Club With Liars, St Vincent, Os Mutantes

The next edition of Beck’s Record Club is set to feature (arguably) its best line-up yet — Liars, St Vincent and Os Mutantes.

St Vincent, known to her parents as Annie Clark, had something to say about the project via via Twitter. “Did a Record Club record with Beck and Liars and Os Mutantes in LA last week! It will be online soonish. Serious fun.”

Previous editions of the Record Club have featured Nigel Godrich and Giovanni Ribisi helping him out on the Velvet Underground’s ‘The Velvet Underground and Nico’ and MGMT and Devendra Banhart joining him to cover ‘Songs of Leonard Cohen’ by (obviously) Leonard Cohen. In February Wilco, Feist and Jamie Lidell collaborated with him on Skip Spence’s ‘Oar.’

Pink Floyd Win High Court Battle Against EMI

The surviving members of Pink Floyd have won their court case against record label EMI. As reported in Spinner, the prog supergroup where forced to take EMI to court over a dispute relating to download royalties and whether the label had the right or not to sell Pink Floyd’s catalogue online as individual tracks and not complete albums.

In a landmark ruling, the court found in favour of Pink Floyd and ordered EMI to pay £40,000 ($60,000) in costs. The judge has yet to rule how much the beleaguered label is to pay in fines. In a further ruling, EMI has also been banned from selling Pink Floyd’s music online.
