“Tonight we are presenting to you our new album, our new child, in its entirety from front to back,” Dears frontman Murray Lightburn informed the sold-out Santa Cruz Mission at the band’s Pop Montreal gig Friday night. As the third and final concert in a three-evening residency of the group introducing its newest lineup — a best-of of previous lineups including the return of guitar hero Patrick Krief and former Thrush Hermit Rob Benvie — as well as its as-yet-untitled fifth album, Friday’s performance was not only an exercise in band/audience trust but also a sneak peek into what Lightburn believes is the culmination of more than ten years of musical tinkering.
At an hour and ten minutes, with no breaks and little audience interaction, it was a demanding test for both the group and the material. As such, Lightburn and the rest of the Dears put faith in the album’s sequencing and their explosive live talents, challenging the audience as well as the band’s reputation.
