From the very first moments of the Saturday night Azure Ray show at Mercury Lounge in New York City, it was readily apparent that the late country-rock legend Gram Parsons would have been alternately impressed and honored. His musical influence on the Alabama dream pop duo — coined “Cosmic American Music” — permeates the work of Orenda Fink and Maria Taylor and never was it more apparent than in this live set.
Their ethereal, dream-like approach to music harks back to a time in the ’70s when the boundaries between musical styles like country, rock, blues, folk and even experimental were blurred and expanded upon by artists like Parsons, Leon Russell, Flying Burrito Brothers and Tim Buckley. A little bit of that eclectic past intertwined with a modern Gothic-Midwestern aesthetic and you’ve got Azure Ray’s signature sound.
It’s not an easy task to properly work a smallish back room at a bar — filling it with intricate vocals, soaring slide-guitar solos and a cello without it sounding like a muddled mess is a challenge. But Azure Ray do it with a calm simplicity that never belies the strong emotional impact of their music.
